There are plenty of things that are going to have an impact on your search engine ranking, this is what we believe the secrets to success are:

  • Ensure that the site is useful. Why spend squllions of pounds on getting a good natural ranking if the vistors to the site do nothing when they get there?
  • Determine the key phrases. The secret here is to be asking yourself “what are people going to key into a search engine that will find my site”. One of the best ways of testing this is to try using a search engine to find your competitors. That will quickly determine what works and what doesn’t;
  • Making sure the Title tag is well crafted. The Title is one of the cornerstones of search engine optimisation, ignore it at your peril;
  • Meta tags still have a purpose with some search engines although Google apparently ignores them now;
  • Make sure the first paragraph is in line with the key phrases, otherwise of course all that time and effort will have been wasted. Be careful not to repeat your keywords or phrases too often or the search engine spiders might think you are trying to ‘spam’ them;
  • Be careful to make sure the content is actually useful, not just informative. Give visitors a reason to come back;
  • Flash is brilliant when used correctly but the search engines can't see the content;
  • Checking that the code (HTML) is good and without errors.
